Armenia tours from Tbilisi

Getting there is simple, and that is the point. The Sadakhlo–Bagratashen crossing sits about 70 km from Tbilisi and is open around the clock. Our vehicles use it daily; on a good morning you are through in under half an hour. That proximity is why most people meet Armenia as a day trip or a two- or three-day loop out of Tbilisi rather than as a separate holiday — and why we run it as a scheduled departure rather than a special request.

What you actually see. The classic first day is the Debed canyon: Haghpat and Sanahin, two UNESCO-listed monasteries a few kilometres apart, joined by a medieval bridge and a great deal of stubbornness — and Akhtala, whose frescoes are the deepest blue you will see in the Caucasus. Two days adds Lake Sevan and the peninsula churches above it, and Dilijan, a wooded spa town Armenians call their Switzerland without much irony. Three days reaches Yerevan: the Cascade, the Blue Mosque, the Vernissage market, the brandy factory, and Echmiadzin — the seat of the Armenian church since 301 AD, and the oldest cathedral in the world.

Food and wine deserve their own paragraph. Armenian cooking is not Georgian cooking. It is lighter, flatter-breaded, more herb-forward: lavash baked on the wall of a clay oven, khorovats grilled over vine cuttings, apricots that taste like a different fruit from the ones you know. The Areni valley has been making wine for six thousand years — a cave there holds the oldest winery ever found — and the modern producers are very good and almost entirely unexported.

Practicalities, verified on 4 September 2026. Citizens of the United States, the United Kingdom, the EU, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea enter Armenia visa-free for up to 180 days a year; other nationalities can use the government e-visa portal, which takes about three business days. The currency is the dram (AMD); cards work in Yerevan and at larger sites, cash is better in villages. Armenia and Azerbaijan share no open border, so a trip that takes in both runs through Georgia — we build it that way as a matter of routine, not as a workaround. And since 1 January 2026 Georgia requires every foreign visitor to hold health and accident insurance of at least 30,000 GEL, checked at the land border on the way back; bring the policy in English, on paper or on your phone.

When to come. May and June are green and full of wildflowers; September and October are warm, gold, and the season for pomegranates and the grape harvest. July and August are hot in Yerevan — well over 35°C — but perfect at Sevan and in Dilijan. Winter is quiet, cheap and clear, and the monasteries in snow are worth the cold.

Armenia rewards a slower trip than most people give it. If you have three days, take three. If you have one, take the canyon — it is the single best day out of Tbilisi in any direction.
