The single best day you can spend out of Tbilisi. This is the classic run north along the Georgian Military Highway — a road carved through the Greater Caucasus that trades the city for glaciers in under three hours. You'll cross the 2,379-metre Jvari Pass, watch the landscape climb from vineyards to bare alpine ridgelines, and arrive in the shadow of Mount Kazbek, one of the highest peaks in the range.
The day's centrepiece is Gergeti Trinity Church, a lone 14th-century chapel perched on a green hill with the glaciated summit rising behind it — the image that put Georgia on a million screens, and far more moving in person. Along the way we stop where the road deserves it: the lakeside Ananuri fortress, the Soviet-era Friendship Monument with its sweeping mountain mosaic, and a village lunch of khinkali and fresh mountain air. It's an easy, awe-heavy day — no hiking required — and it's why most people fall for Georgia.

Frequently asked
How fit do I need to be?
Not very. This is a driving tour with short, optional walks. The only climb — up to Gergeti Trinity — is done by 4x4, though you can hike it (about 1.5 hours) if you'd rather.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes, it's a family-friendly day. The mountain roads are winding, so bring motion-sickness remedies for anyone prone to it.
What should I bring?
A warm layer (it's cooler and windier at altitude, even in summer), comfortable shoes, sunglasses and a camera. Weather in the mountains changes fast.
What happens if the weather is bad?
The trip runs in most conditions; the mountains are beautiful in cloud too. In rare cases of road closure we'll offer an alternative date or a full refund.

“Absolutely the best day of our trip. Giorgi our guide was warm, funny and endlessly knowledgeable, and Gergeti church in the morning light was breathtaking. The WhatsApp booking took two minutes and they confirmed within the hour. Cannot recommend Traverse enough.”
“Brought my parents and kids — Traverse made it easy for all ages. Comfortable car, flexible stops, patient guide. The mountains are something my family still talks about.”
