Gudauri Ski Day from Tbilisi
Highlights
- Door to door from your Tbilisi hotel to the lifts and back the same evening
- Georgia's biggest resort: lifts from about 1,990m up to 3,279m, all of it above the treeline
- Five to six hours on the mountain, with the drive and the timing handled for you
- A guide who sorts the rental counters and the lift map, then lets you ski
- Non-skiers pay the same and get the snowfields, the cafés and the view down the whole range
- Winter on the Georgian Military Highway, up to the shoulder of the Jvari Pass
- If the pass closes or the lifts stop, we say so before we leave Tbilisi
Gudauri is the mountain Tbilisi skis. It sits 120 kilometres north of the city on the Georgian Military Highway, just short of the Jvari Pass, and its lifts climb from around 1,990 metres to 3,279 metres — high, wide, treeless terrain holding snow from December into April, best between mid-January and early March. We run it as a single day: early pickup from your hotel, two and a half to three hours up through the Caucasus, the mountain to yourself, back in Tbilisi the same evening. No minibus timetables, no standing on the highway at dusk hoping for a seat.
What we sell is the day, not the gear. Your lift pass and ski or snowboard rental are not included — you buy both at the resort, in GEL. Our guide meets you there, helps with boot sizes, reads the lift map, agrees a time to regroup and stays reachable by phone all day. We do not teach skiing and will not pretend otherwise: Gudauri has ski schools, and a lesson is booked and paid there. We will walk you to the desk; that is the whole of our involvement.
Non-skiers are welcome at the same price. Winter Gudauri earns the drive on its own — snowfields, viewpoints over the Devil's Valley, cafés facing the whole range — and if you want to ride a lift up for the view, the ticket window will sort you out. And the part other operators leave off the page: this road closes. Heavy snow and avalanche risk shut the highway above Gudauri at short notice, with no way around. If the pass is closed or the lifts are not turning, you hear it from us before we set off, and you take a new date or a full refund.
Day-by-day itinerary
•Tbilisi → Gudauri → Tbilisi
Early pickup from your hotel in central Tbilisi and north onto the Georgian Military Highway — two and a half to three hours of climbing in winter, with a coffee and bathroom stop on the way. At Gudauri your guide walks you to the rental shop and the ticket window, helps with boot sizes and goes through the lift map and the day's open runs with you. Then the mountain is yours for roughly five to six hours. Non-skiers can walk the snowfields, sit out the day in a café with the range in front of them, or buy a lift ticket at the window if they want the view from the top. We regroup at an agreed time in the mid-afternoon so we come back down the pass in daylight, with a photo stop at the Friendship Monument if the weather plays along, and reach Tbilisi in the evening.
Price includes
- Return transfer Tbilisi–Gudauri in a heated vehicle, with space for your rented gear
- Hotel pickup and drop-off in central Tbilisi
- A licensed guide in English or Russian for the whole day
- Help at the rental shop and the ticket window — sizing, paperwork, lift map, meeting time
- A phone number that answers all day while you are on the mountain
- A morning road and lift check before we leave Tbilisi
- Bottled water
Not included
- Lift pass — bought at the resort window. In the 2025/26 season an adult day pass was 70 GEL and a child pass (6–12) 35 GEL; under-6s ski free. The resort sets these prices and changes them between seasons.
- Ski or snowboard rental — bought on the mountain, at the resort's rental shops, which are independent businesses and set their own rates. A full set means skis, boots and poles, or a board and boots; a helmet is charged separately, and several days together cost less per day. Your guide is with you for sizing and the paperwork.
- Ski lessons and instructors. Gudauri has its own ski schools; you book and pay them on site, and we only point you to the desk.
- Lunch, drinks and personal expenses — food and coffee on the mountain cost more than in Tbilisi
- Travel insurance — bring a policy that covers winter sports

Meeting point
Your hotel in central Tbilisi (pickup), or Freedom Square by arrangement
Winter pickups are early — usually 06:45–07:30. We confirm your exact time the evening before by WhatsApp, together with the morning's road and lift report, so you know before you get up whether the day is running.
Frequently asked questions
I have never skied. Is this trip for me?
Yes, with one honest caveat: we provide the day, not the teaching. Gudauri's lower slopes are wide and gentle, which is a kind place to start, and the resort has ski schools where you can book a lesson on arrival and pay the school directly — our guide will walk you to the desk. We do not employ instructors and we do not teach. Many first-timers simply rent a set, use the beginner lifts and work it out. And if you decide not to ski at all once you see the mountain, that is fine too: the price is the same either way.
What happens if the road closes or the lifts stop?
This is the real risk of a winter day up there, so here is the policy in plain terms. Heavy snow and avalanche hazard close the Georgian Military Highway above Gudauri at short notice — the Gudauri–Kobi stretch and the approach to the Jvari Pass are the usual spots — and there is no alternative road. High wind also shuts the lifts on its own. We check the Roads Department bulletin and the resort's lift status every morning before departure. If the road is closed, or the lifts are not running, we cancel before we leave Tbilisi and you choose another date or a full refund, with no deduction. If a closure comes down while we are already in Gudauri, the guide stays with the group until the road reopens; if it stays shut into the night, we help you find a room up there, but those costs are not in the tour price.
What should I bring?
Warm waterproof layers, a jacket and trousers you do not mind getting wet, gloves, a hat, and goggles or sunglasses. High-factor sun cream matters more than people expect — above 2,000 metres the sun comes off the snow as well as out of the sky, and it burns on overcast days. Bring your own gloves and goggles if you have them: the rental shops stock skis, boards, boots and helmets, but the small items are less reliable. Bring GEL in cash as well as a card, for the pass, the rental deposit and lunch. And pack something warm for the drive itself — the vehicle is heated, the roadside stops are not.
When in the year can I book this?
Gudauri's lifts generally run from December to April, and the snow is most dependable from mid-January to early March. The exact opening depends on how much snow has fallen, so the resort announces it each autumn — the date for the coming winter is not out yet, and we will not guess at one. Ask us and we will tell you what the resort has actually confirmed. We do not sell this day outside the lift season; in summer and autumn the same road makes a far better Kazbegi trip.
How much should I budget on top of the tour price?
For the 2025/26 season the resort charged 70 GEL for an adult day lift pass and 35 GEL for children aged 6 to 12, with under-6s free. Ski or snowboard rental and a helmet are extra, but the rental shops are independent businesses and publish no common tariff, so ask at the counter rather than budget against a figure we would have invented. None of that money comes to us, we do not mark it up, and the resort and the rental shops can change prices between seasons — treat the pass prices as last season's and check at the window on the day. A non-skier who stays on foot spends nothing beyond food and drinks.
How many hours do I actually get on the mountain?
Roughly five to six, which is what makes an early start worth it. The drive is two and a half to three hours each way on a clear winter morning and longer when the ploughs are still working, so we leave Tbilisi before seven and regroup in Gudauri in the mid-afternoon. That timing is deliberate: it gets us back over the pass in daylight, which is the right call on that road in winter. If you want more than one day of skiing, tell us and we will quote the transfer with a night in Gudauri instead.
