Is Georgia safe to visit? For the great majority of travellers to this Caucasus country, yes. Crime against visitors is low, hospitality is close to a national religion, and the risks you are most likely to meet are the ordinary ones of a mountain country: winding roads, weather that turns quickly and high passes that close when the snow comes. A few things are specific to 2026 and worth knowing before you book, from daily political demonstrations in central Tbilisi to a new insurance rule at the border. Everything time-sensitive below was checked on 17 September 2026, against official advice wherever it exists.

Is Georgia safe right now? The short answer

  • Crime: low, in the UK Foreign Office's words. Watch for pickpockets and drink spiking.
  • Politics: daily demonstrations outside Parliament in Tbilisi since late 2024. Keep your distance.
  • Roads: the most realistic risk, with passes that close in bad weather.
  • Avoid: Abkhazia and South Ossetia, Georgian territory that the Georgian government does not control.
  • Paperwork: since 1 January 2026 every foreign tourist must hold health and accident insurance.

Is Tbilisi safe at night? Drink spiking and scams

Tbilisi keeps late hours, and walking back to your hotel after dinner in the Old Town or Sololaki is one of the pleasures of the city. The hazards after dark are mostly practical: pavements are uneven, lighting away from the main streets can be poor and short power cuts do happen, so keep your phone charged and its torch within reach.

The one nightlife warning to take seriously is drink spiking. The classic scam described in official advice is a friendly stranger keen to take you to a particular restaurant or club. Choose your own venues, buy your own drinks and keep them in sight.

Taxis, Bolt and money

Use an app. Bolt covers Tbilisi, including airport rides; the fare is set before you get in and the trip is on record. Official advice agrees: don't flag cars down in the street, and check that the seatbelts work. Some businesses quote prices in dollars or euros, but payment must be made in lari, so check the rate before you agree. Outside the larger towns card terminals and ATMs are not a given, so carry enough cash before you head for the hills.

Driving and mountain roads

This is where Georgia asks for real care. Outside the cities roads are often badly lit, livestock wanders onto the tarmac, driving can be erratic, and rain or snow at altitude can close routes; landslides are common. The Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi crosses the Jvari Pass at 2,379 metres and closes when avalanche risk is high: in January 2026 all traffic was stopped between Gudauri and Kobi for exactly that reason. The track over the Abano Pass into Tusheti is usually open only from June to early October.

If you drive yourself, don't drink at all, and pay any traffic fine before flying home: visitors with unpaid fines can be refused exit. For the high valleys of Svaneti and Tusheti, an experienced local driver in a proper 4x4 is the sensible choice. Our vehicles have seat belts and are regularly inspected, and our drivers know mountain roads well. If a road closure stops the Kazbegi day trip, you get another date or a full refund.

Hiking safety and mountain rescue

Save 112 in your phone: it is Georgia's single emergency number for police, ambulance and the fire and rescue service. Emergency response in remote mountains may be limited, so plan never to need it.

  • Don't hike alone, and tell your guesthouse which route you are taking and when you expect to be back.
  • Watch the sky. Lightning is a real risk on exposed ridges in summer, and so are wildfires in dry spells.
  • Respect the altitude. Altitude sickness can affect people around Kazbek and in Gudauri, so gain height gradually.
  • Mind your step in early summer, when vipers are about; few clinics outside the towns carry antivenom.
  • Treat any dog bite or scratch as urgent and see a doctor the same day, because of the rabies risk.
  • Keep well away from the boundary lines with Abkhazia and South Ossetia. At Davit Gareja, the border with Azerbaijan around the Udabno caves is unmarked and disputed, so take care not to cross it.

On our Svaneti 4-day tour you walk with a licensed mountain guide. All our guides are trained in first aid, and before every mountain trip we brief you on what happens if the weather, your health or the road lets you down. Choosing between regions? Read Kazbegi vs Svaneti.

Water, food and health

Georgian food is a reason to come in itself, and our Georgian food guide explains what to order. Pace yourself at a supra, though: the dishes are rich, the toasts keep coming and homemade chacha is a great deal stronger than wine. Tbilisi's water company, GWP, says the city's tap water meets national standards and WHO recommendations; elsewhere quality varies, and bottled water is on sale everywhere. Medical facilities in Tbilisi are available but can be expensive, and outside the capital they are limited.

Be careful with medicines: even non-prescription medicines containing codeine are illegal, and visitors have been detained despite holding a prescription. Carry the prescription and original packaging, and check before you travel. Penalties for illegal drugs are severe: the UK Foreign Office warns of 5 to 25 years in jail, and since July 2025 possessing more than 5 grams of dried cannabis can bring up to six years.

Solo and female travellers

Georgia is a comfortable destination for solo travellers and women travelling alone, and ordinary city sense is enough. Tbilisi is cosmopolitan; villages are more conservative. In churches women cover their hair, everyone dresses modestly, and scarves are usually available at the entrance. On our small-group tours you are with a licensed guide throughout.

LGBT travellers

Same-sex sexual activity is legal in Georgia and an anti-discrimination law is in force. However, a 2024 law, “On Family Values and Protection of Minors”, bans the recognition of same-sex unions and adoption by same-sex couples, and restricts public gatherings and media content promoting same-sex relationships. UK advice notes that same-sex relationships are not widely accepted, that public affection can lead to harassment and that homophobic assaults do happen, so discretion in public is the realistic approach, especially outside Tbilisi. A private tour gives you your own car, guide and pace.

Protests and political demonstrations in Tbilisi

Since late November 2024, demonstrations have been held every day outside the Parliament building on Rustaveli Avenue, and they were still going on in mid-September 2026. They can spread through the centre, particularly on Saturday evenings and political anniversaries, and some have ended in clashes between police and protesters. The rules on assemblies were tightened in 2024 and 2025, and blocking a road or covering your face at a rally can now lead to detention or criminal charges. UK advice links some cases of refused entry or trouble leaving Georgia to alleged presence at, or participation in, demonstrations.

For a visitor the approach is simple: check local news, keep clear of large gatherings and don't stop to film. Separately, Rustaveli Avenue between Chovelidze Street and Freedom Square is closed to traffic for reconstruction due to finish by the end of November 2026.

Abkhazia, South Ossetia and the boundary lines

Abkhazia and South Ossetia (the Tskhinvali region) are Georgian territory that the Georgian government does not control. Under the Law of Georgia on Occupied Territories, foreigners may enter Abkhazia only from Zugdidi municipality and the Tskhinvali region only from Gori municipality. Entering either region from Russia is illegal under Georgian law and a criminal offence; the UK Foreign Office puts the possible penalty at heavy fines or up to four years in prison, and stamps from the de facto authorities in your passport can be treated as evidence of illegal entry.

The administrative boundary lines are mostly unmarked and away from roads, and people who stray across them can be detained. The UK government advises against all travel to both regions.

Earthquakes and natural hazards

Small earthquakes are frequent in Georgia, and strong ones are rare. In the mountains, landslides and flooding after heavy rain and winter avalanches on the high passes are the likelier hazards, which is why flexible plans matter.

Travel insurance and entry rules

Citizens of the EU, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and many other countries stay visa-free for up to a year. What has changed is insurance. Since 1 January 2026, under the Law of Georgia on Tourism, every tourist must hold health and accident insurance that:

  • covers the whole stay, including the days of arrival and departure
  • has a sum insured of at least 30,000 GEL
  • is in English or Georgian, on paper or on your phone
  • comes from a Georgian or a foreign insurer

Your airline may ask to see it at check-in, and border officers may check it on arrival by air or by land, including when you come back from Armenia. The rule applies to every trip, a day in Kazbegi as much as five days in Tusheti. Make sure the policy also covers hiking or skiing and medical evacuation; if you don't have one, tell us when you book and we will arrange it.

How we run safe trips

Traverse is a licensed tour operator based in Tbilisi, and every departure is covered by operator liability insurance. Our guides are licensed and know each route personally, group departures are capped at 14, and a trip phone answers seven days a week while you travel. There is more on our about page.

The bottom line

Georgia is a safe, welcoming country with a handful of real, manageable risks: mountain roads, mountain weather and a political situation in the capital best watched from a distance. Bring insurance, use an app for taxis, and avoid demonstrations and boundary lines. Browse our Georgia tours or tell us your dates.
