The best time to visit Georgia is May to June or September to October, when the lowlands are warm rather than hot and almost every region is open. If the high mountains are the point of your trip, aim for mid-June to September instead, when the Tusheti road is usually open and the high trails in Svaneti and Kazbegi are clear of snow.

Georgia is a small country with several climates. Tbilisi and the Kakheti wine country are dry and continental, the Black Sea coast around Batumi is subtropical and wet, and the Greater Caucasus makes its own weather between 1,500 and 3,000 metres. So the right answer depends on what you want from the trip. Below we break the year down by season, by month, by region and by interest.

Georgia in spring: green valleys, snow on the peaks

Spring reaches the lowlands in March and is in full swing by May. Tbilisi averages about 19°C by day in April and 24°C in May, Kakheti turns green, and the cities are at their best for long walks. The catch is rain: May has more wet days in Tbilisi than any other month, so pack a light jacket. The mountains run weeks behind. Kazbegi is open and beautiful under late snow, but the high trails wait for summer and the road to Tusheti usually stays shut until late May or June.

Georgia in summer: the mountain season

June to August is when the Caucasus opens up. Alpine meadows flower in June, and July and August bring the most settled hiking weather in Kazbegi, Svaneti and Tusheti. Stepantsminda, the small town at 1,740 metres below Mount Kazbek, averages around 20°C by day in high summer, with cold nights. The lowlands are a different story: Tbilisi averages 31 to 32°C in July and August and often goes higher. Build a summer trip around the mountains or the sea, and keep city days short.

Georgia in autumn: harvest season and golden light

For many travellers, September and October are the finest months of the year. Tbilisi eases to about 26°C in September and 20°C in October, the light softens, and rtveli, the grape harvest, takes over Kakheti. The mountains stay open through September and turn gold in October. By November the lowlands are cool and quiet, and the Tusheti road has closed for the winter.

Georgia in winter: skiing, feasts and quiet cities

Tbilisi winters are mild: daytime averages sit around 7 to 8°C in December and January, with nights close to freezing. Ski lifts open in the second half of December at Gudauri, Bakuriani and Mestia, the cities celebrate New Year and then Orthodox Christmas on 7 January, and the wine country carries on at a slower pace. The high mountains are another matter. Tusheti is cut off until the pass reopens in late spring or early summer, and heavy snow periodically closes the road to Kazbegi.

Georgia weather by month

The figures below are Tbilisi's average daytime highs (1991–2020 climate normals).

  • January: about 7°C. Snowy mountains and the ski season in full swing; on 7 January the Alilo Christmas procession fills the centre of Tbilisi. If you're heading north, keep a spare day in case the road closes.
  • February: about 8°C, deep winter in the Caucasus and usually the most reliable snow in Gudauri. The cities are quiet.
  • March: about 13°C. The lowlands wake up while skiing continues higher up.
  • April: about 19°C and green hills. Orthodox Easter is a four-day public holiday and often falls in April (12 April in 2026); in 2027 it falls on 2 May.
  • May: about 24°C, the greenest month, with some showers. Georgia also has public holidays on 9, 12, 17 and 26 May, the last being Independence Day.
  • June: around 28°C. Wildflowers in the mountains, and the month the Tusheti road usually opens.
  • July: hot lowlands (31°C and up), ideal weather in the highlands and high season on the Black Sea.
  • August: about 32°C, the hottest month in Tbilisi and peak season both in the mountains and in Batumi. Book early.
  • September: about 26°C, a warm sea and the harvest under way in Kakheti. Our pick for a first trip.
  • October: about 20°C, the last weeks of the harvest and autumn colour in the mountains. Tbilisoba, the capital's city festival, is on 3–4 October in 2026.
  • November: about 13°C, cool and grey, with the Tusheti road closed and very few visitors; on the Black Sea coast it's still the rainy season.
  • December: about 8°C, New Year lights in Tbilisi, and the ski season starting towards the end of the month.

When to visit each region: Kazbegi, Svaneti, Tusheti and beyond

Kazbegi

Kazbegi is the easiest high-mountain region to reach from Tbilisi, and our Kazbegi day trip goes there and back in a day. June to September gives the clearest views and paths around Gergeti Trinity Church at 2,170 metres, and October adds autumn colour and fresh snow on Kazbek. Winter is spectacular, but the Gudauri–Kobi section of the Georgian Military Highway, over the Jvari Pass, closes to all traffic whenever the avalanche risk is high, as it did several times in January and February 2026. Check the tour page for current departure dates.

Svaneti

Svaneti rewards a longer stay and a summer date. Mid-June to early October is the window for the glacier hikes around Mestia and the drive up to Ushguli, at 2,100 metres one of Europe's highest permanently inhabited villages. In winter the road to Mestia is kept open and Mestia has its own ski slopes, but the road on to Ushguli can close for a while after heavy snow. See our Svaneti 4-day tour for current departures, and if you can only choose one region, read Kazbegi vs Svaneti.

Tusheti road season

The only road into Tusheti crosses the Abano Pass on an unsealed mountain track, and snow shuts it for most of the year. It usually opens in June, sometimes as early as late May, once the snow has cleared (in 2026 it opened on 20 June), and closes again with the first heavy snow, usually in late September or October. For the most dependable weather, go between July and early September. Our Tusheti private expedition runs just for your party, so we set the dates with you within the months the pass is open.

Tbilisi and Kakheti

The capital and the wine country work in every month. April to June and September to October are the most comfortable; in July and August, start early and rest through the afternoon heat. Winter is quiet and mild, a good season for cellars, sulphur baths and long lunches.

Batumi and the Black Sea season

The swimming season on the coast runs from July to September, with the sea averaging about 25°C through those months and nearer 21°C in October. September is what many visitors call the velvet season: the water is still warm and the August crowds have gone. Batumi is also one of the wettest places in Georgia, though, and September to November bring its heaviest rainfall, so plan for a few wet days whenever you go.

Best time to visit Georgia for your interests

Rtveli wine harvest

Rtveli usually begins in Kakheti in late August or early September and runs to mid-October, moving from village to village as the grapes ripen; in parts of western Georgia it can carry on into November. In 2026 the season was under way in Kakheti by 10 September, when the National Wine Agency reported about 2,700 tonnes of grapes already processed. For pressing, busy cellars and long harvest lunches, aim for mid-September to early October. Our Kakheti wine day trip visits a family qvevri cellar and a boutique winery. In October the markets also fill with fresh churchkhela.

Gudauri ski season

Gudauri, about two hours north of Tbilisi, has a ski season that runs from late December into April. For 2025–26, Georgia's state Mountain Trails Agency scheduled the lifts to start on 27 December 2025, with runs opening in stages as the snow allowed. The 2026–27 opening date hadn't been announced when we checked on 17 September 2026. February usually has the most reliable snow, and the holiday weeks around New Year are the busiest. Bakuriani and Mestia also open their slopes in the second half of December.

Hiking

For multi-day routes in Svaneti and Tusheti, go from July to mid-September. Day hikes around Kazbegi work from June to October, and lowland walks in Kakheti and around Tbilisi are most pleasant in spring and autumn.

Fewer crowds, easier weather

Late April, May and the second half of October bring mild temperatures on either side of the peak months. November and March are the quietest of all, and a good fit for a Tbilisi and wine-country trip if you don't need the mountains.

Before you book

  • Insurance is now required. Since 1 January 2026, foreign tourists entering Georgia need health and accident insurance for the whole stay, with at least 30,000 GEL of cover, on paper or in electronic form, in English or Georgian (verified 17 September 2026).
  • Dress for altitude. Mountain weather changes fast in any month, so bring a warm layer even in August.
  • Leave slack in winter. Keep a buffer day around any trip north of Tbilisi.
